Sacyr Construccion completes first project in Qatar

Spanish contractor Sacyr Construcción is targeting more work in the Middle East after completing its first project in Qatar.

The EUR 125mn ($136.6mn) project, executed in conjunction with Combined Group Company, is a semi-urban zone spanning 152 hectares in Bani Hajer.

It involved the provision of utilities services to more than 660 plots of land, four schools, five mosques and six retail areas. A 101-km sanitation network was also laid and five rainwater runoff tanks were built to prevent flooding.

The project entailed the execution of several roads and streets running a total of 29 kilometers, including sections that range in width from 16 to 40 meters, with a traffic circle and two intersections with traffic lights.

During construction, more than 120,000 metric tons of asphalt and 280,000 m2 of paving stones were used. The project, which required more than 8.5 million man-hours, witnessed no serious accidents.

Sacyr, which also has other projects underway in Qatar, has included the Middle East among its targets for growth in the construction, industrial and water businesses, where it offers its experience and innovative capacity.

The company has ongoing projects in Kuwait and Oman, and is also tendering for projects in United Arab Emirates and Jordan.
