UAE to release new fire safety code at Intersec

An updated UAE Fire and Life Safety Code of Practice will be launched at Intersec 2017 in Dubai next week, according to a senior official with Dubai Civil Defence (DCD).

The new code will have 20 chapters, one more than the previous edition, but will consist of 1,564 pages compared to just 707 pages, Lt. Col. Ali Al Mutawa, Assistant General Manager for Smart Services at DCD revealed on Tuesday at a press conference to launch the event.

Engineers operating in the field of safety will be able to refer to 784 illustrations in the updated code compared to 296 previously.

“Due to increased construction and infrastructure activity in the UAE, we want to keep up to international safety standards, and we constantly strive to evolve and be better than yesterday,” said Al Mutawa.

“Chapters that have been updated include those relating to fire doors; cladding in buildings; access for Civil Defence trucks to reduce incident response times; and educating consultants, contractors and end-users on the latest modifications.”

New regulations governing alarm systems in houses and tourist facilities in Dubai Marina will be released and there are also specific new requirements regarding the storage of flammable liquids and renewable energy.

Lt. Col. Al Mutawa revealed that at Intersec Dubai Civil Defence plans to showcase new ‘floating fire fighting’ platforms to help combat fires in waterside buildings following the recent launch of the Dubai Water Canal.

He added that visitors to its stand would be able to experience a simulation of its live operations room that allows it to monitor and respond to incidents across the entire city.

Mysteriously, Al Mutawa revealed Dubai Civil Defence would launch a new initiative at Intersec known as ‘Dolphin’ though he refused to provide further details on the subject.

Intersec, the world’s largest tradeshow for security, safety, and fire protection, starts on Sunday, January 22 and runs for three days.

With 17 of the world’s top 20 security providers on board, Intersec 2017 will spread over seven sections of Commercial Security, Fire & Rescue, Safety & Health, Homeland Security & Policing, Information Security, Smart Home & Building Automation, and Physical & Perimeter Security.
