Jordan builds first shale oil power plant

Jordan’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Ibrahim Saif revealed the construction of the country’s first shale oil power plant will begin in June 2016, according to Jordon News Agency. The $2.2bn project will generate electricity through direct combustion of shale oil. It will have the capacity of 470MW.

In a press statement, Saif said that the Estonian-Malaysian-Chinese consortium is in the last stage of financial closure. Currently, discussion about the “number of issues with Chinese financiers” are still ongoing to implement the project.

The joint consortium was signed last month in the presence of Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour, a $1.6 billion agreement to establish the power plant in Jordan’s Attarat area.
